For same-sex couples who intend to marry in Italy the Unione Civile was created. It is new law which defends the rights and responsibilities of the couple whomever they may be. Same-sex marriages can be carried out in any venue that is considered “sede comunale” (municipal site). If we consider just how many venues this includes – villas, castles, palaces, and even beaches – well then that means you can have the wedding of your dreams in the place of your dreams!
The union will be valid and possible for anyone who is of age and not yet married, and who appears before a government official (or a delegate) in the presence of two witnesses. The ceremony will be registered in the Archivio di Stato Civile (Register Office). Together the couple can then choose which surname to use for their new family… because that is exactly what they are!
